The Zone of Proximal Development and Coaching

Many years ago, Lev Vygostsky developed and created the idea of the zone of proximal development (ZPD). Essentially, there is a threshold of what one can learn by themselves. With the help of a skilled practitioner, one can tackle challenges and extend one’s learning and achieve greater results.

Tacit knowledge, knowledge from experience and professional knowledge, often ideas learned in universities or in training programs, help a lot as well. A coach who has ample tacit and professional knowledge can act as a critical friend, a guide, and a consultant to help you grow.

We all have times where help is needed. I am thankful and grateful to have been principal, and worked as a personal trainer. Teachers, students, parents, and customers helped me grow. I am thankful for my wonderful professors in England who facilitated my learning to earn a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management. I am thankful for my great teachers in the Philippines who helped me understand many ideas to accurately understand the fundamentals of nutrition and fitness.

Working with a coach can help one see the world through new perspectives, while simultaneously, learning can be more enjoyable. Excitement and achievements can be shared with someone who cares and a sense of gratitude can be felt. Working with a coach can be a wonderful and rewarding experience that can lead you to new areas of learning and growth.
