To succeed, persistence is vital. Doing something once does not make an action a habit. However, doing something consistently over a period of time will help create a routine. Simultaneously, actions performed more routinely can become more enjoyable.
If reading a book feels like a chore on the first day, but we continue to read a little each day, eventually the action of reading will feel less like a mundane task, but more like a worthwhile activity. The same is true with fitness. Going after work to a gym may feel difficult, but once we make a habit, we can understand the joys and benefits of working out often.
At the same time, we must be careful to not see the world through a narrow tunnel because of our preferences. We may say to ourselves, “I only like to read this genre of books” or “I perform only these exercises at the gym.” With a closed mindset, opportunity to grow in new ways is not easy.
Eventually, we can become tired and the joy that was once known diminishes. So, having an open mind and asking ourselves, what other ways could we do an activity is important. Should I begin reading other kinds of books or should I ask a friend about what authors and narratives intrigue them? Am I tired of doing the same exercises and what am I achieving?
Research, learning about new actions, and asking a critical friend is important. Working with a coach, who is also an expert in different fields, is great because often they have tacit and professional knowledge that they can use to help guide someone.
We all see life through different lenses. Speaking with a coach can help us establish routines, but also sustain them. A coach can offer new perspectives and in a coaching session, a client will begin to share their new perspectives with their coach. Together, with words spoken out loud, respect for different ideas and opinions, and active listening, a coaching session can become a beautiful experience for ideas to flourish, insights to be gained, and growth to occur. Regularly meeting with a coach can facilitate learning new perspectives and growth in new ways.
